SEYBOLT Family History

Seybolt Surname
The surname Seybolt (variously spelled as Seyboldt, Seibold, Sebald and others) derives from the German elements "sigi" ("victory") and "bald" ("bold, courageous"). According to census records, American Seybolt families originate in New York and then expand into Pennsylvania, the Mid-Atlantic states, the Mid-West, and beyond, as we see below with our family.

The Seybolt family trace back to Württemberg, in southwestern Germany (then a duchy under the Holy Roman Empire). They are first found in America in Orange County, New York, about 55 miles northwest of New York City near where New York meets Pennsylvania and New Jersey. Two Seybolt sisters from Otisville married two Reeve gentlement (likely close relatives) and their children migrated to Porter Township, Scioto County, Ohio.

Five of seven Seybolt siblings in Orange County, New York, have relations to the REEVE family:

Cholera?
Tragically, the years 1831 and 1832 saw the deaths of sons Ira and David, and Abigail over a six-month time frame. This could reflect the great cholera outbreak that started many years earlier in India and exploded in England, Ireland, and Ameria in 1831. On the other hand, a review of headstones in the Mount Hope Plains Cemetery does not show an inordinate number of deaths in those years.

Abigail (Reeve) Seybolt died 20 years later on March 26, 1832. She is also buried at Mount Hope Plains Cemetery.[Cem]
