Amy Desire COTTRELLΔ (~1822-1888)

131. April 2020Amy Desire CottrellΔ was born in Richland County, Ohio[Mar 1867], in the 1820s. She married John Fenton, reportedly on, September 21, 1841, in Waterford Township, Erie County, Pennsylvania. They had as many as six children, including to sets of twins, but only three survived to adulthood. After John's death in 1852, she remarried to Oliver Merritt (Sr.), a native of Connecticut, and had at least two sons. All together she had as many as eight children, including two sets of twin boys:

Amy's Birth Year
April 2020Amy's recorded age varies considerably. The earliest record gives her age as 28 in November 1850 (i.e., born about 1822).[Cen 1850] Later she was recorded as age 38 in December 1867 (i.e., born about 1829)[Mar 1867] and age 52 in June 1880 (i.e., born 1827-1828).[Cen 1880] Her birth age is also reported by many to be 1818, but I have yet to find a source for that.

The Fenton family started in Garrettsville, Hiram Township, Portage County, Ohio, where most of their children were reportedly born, but by 1850 they resettled in McKean Township, Erie County, Pennsylvania, where John worked as a laborer. Curiously, son Winfield Scott was not recorded in the 1850 census.[Cen 1850A]

John Fenton reportedly died in 1852 in Ohio, at about the age of 39. Son Aaron is also report to have died around the same year in McKean Township.

Amy remarried to Oliver Merritt, a two-time widower and father of four, reportedly on September 1, 1857, in Greenville, Mercer County, Pennsylvania, where she, Oliver, and their one-year-old son Oliver, Jr., were subsequently enumerated in 1860.[Cen 1860A] Amy's children from her first marriage were not recorded with them; rather, son Winfield Scott Fenton, age 12, was enumerated with the Chauncey & Eunice Wood family back in Garrettsville, Ohio.[Cen 1860B]

Oliver Merritt (Sr.) reportedly died on January 1, 1867, in Charlotte, Eaton County, Michigan. He was 82 years old.

Amy remarried later that same year to Dr. Ansel J. Chapin, a physician in Odessa, on December 17, 1867, in Sebewa Township, Ionia County, Michigan. Amy was reportedly 38 years old and Ansel was 66.[Mar 1867A]

By 1880, Amy, Ansel, and Amy's son Oliver resided in Charlotte. Ansel continued work as a physician and Oliver was noted as suffering from typhoid.[Cen 1880] Son Oliver reportedly died on August 16, 1880, in Charlotte, likely succumbing to typhoid. He was only 21 years old.

Amy may have married a fourth time to William D. Taylor of Binghamton, Broome County, New York, on January 4, 1888, in Tioga County, Pennsylvania, where "Amy D. Cottrell" was living in Mansfield. He was a 56-year-old widower and she was recorded to be 48 years old (she would have been in her early 60s), but no parents or prior husbands were recorded.[Mar 1888]

April 2020Amy Desire Cottrell reportedly died on October 12, 1888, in Union City, Erie County, Pennsylvania. She was as much as 66 years old.

Harriet S. COTTRELL3 (~1825-1850)

132. Harriet S. Cottrell3 was born around 1825. She married Orrin P. Andrews3 about 1850 in Erie County, Pennsylvania. She died giving birth to their only daughter in November of 1850 or 1851. She was only in her mid-20s:

1321. Candace Mandana Andrews4 9 Nov (1850-1851) 1 Jun 1912 (61)

Harriet and Orrin have not been found in the 1850 census of Erie County. That year Harriet's family was in Fairview Township and Orrin's was in Amity Township, 30 miles to the west.[Cen 1850]

Orrin went on to remarry and baby Candace was raised by her Andrews grandparents.

Rosetta A. COTTRELL (~1827-)

133. Rosetta A. Cottrell was reportedly born in Erie County, Pennsylvania, on 26 February, but the year varies between 1827 and 1830. She married William Augustus Burt around 1846 and had at least seven children before they parted ways and Rosetta remarried to John Wilson. She and John had a son together. She later married widowers Samuel Nichols and Tompkins Loucks. All together she had 12 children, only 8 of whom have been identified and 6 of whom survived through the 1900 census:

1331. William Henry Burt (1846-1847) 28 Jan 1931 (83)
1332. Rachel N. Burt 2 Oct 1849 9 Jun 1924 (74)
1333. Francis F. Burt 15 Aug 1852 4 Feb 1904 (51)
1334. Ellen Elizabeth Burt 27 Feb (1856) 12 Mar 1934 (78)
1335. Henrietta Eliza Burt 29 Jan 1860 20 Sep 1946 (86)
1336. Mary E. Burt 6 Apr 1862 27 Dec 1943 (81)
1337. Esther S. Burt 1864 1897 (33)

1338. John M. Wilson 20 Aug 1874 19 Oct 1940 (66)

The Burt's first son was born in New York, and afterward they moved west to Munson Township, Geauga County, Ohio, where their next three children were likely born.[Cen 1850] By 1860 they returned to Rosetta's hometown of Waterford Township, Erie County, Pennsylvania, where William farmed.[Cen 1860]

Sometime in the late 1860s, Rosetta and William parted ways and by 1870 Rosetta remarried to John Wilson, a blind, widowed farmer in Union Township (Union City), Erie County, and she and her unmarried children moved in with him, as did her parents.[Cen 1870]

John Wilson died in 1877 and was buried in Evergreen Cemetery, Union City. He was about 72 years old.[Grave]

Rosetta remarried to Samuel Nichols by 1870 and she and her three youngest children moved 20 miles east to Spring Creek, Warren County, Pennsylvania, where Samuel farmed.[Cen 1880]

After Samuel, Rosetta remarried to Tompkins Loucks in the midd 1880s. He was a widower farmer in Farmington Township, Warren County, 25 miles east of Spring Creek.[Cen 1880] He died on February 3, 1889, at the age of 76, was buried with first wife at Foster Cemetery in Lander, Farmington Township.[Grave]

William Augustus Burt reportedly died in Cambridge, Guernsey County, Ohio, in 1895. He was about 79 years old.

Rosetta lived with her daughter Mary (Burt) Shreve and her family on Grant Street in Union City by 1900.[Cen 1900]

Rosetta Cottrell reportedly died on March 10, 1913, in Union City. She was between 83 and 86 years old.

[V] Cotrell, age 27, Pennsylvania
M. [A]. Cotrell, age 30, New York (Fanny's birth state but incorrect age)
Rosetta Cotrell, age 1, Wisconsin

In 1857, around the time of his marriage to Sarah Jane and the birth of his daughter Rosetta in Wisconsin, Sylvanus was enumerated in Township 110 North, Range 26 West (Kasota Township), Le Sueur County, Minnesota Territory, with his brother "M. Cotrell" (apparently Merrill) and his young family.[Cen 1857A] Daughter Rosetta was curiously recorded with his brother in a second record in Township 111 North, Range 23 West (Montgomery Township).[Cen 1857B] Two years later Sylvanus purchased land in Township 109 North, Range 26 West (Kasota Township), Section 9, on November 1, 1859.[Cen 1859]

The Cottrells started their family in Wisconsin and by 1860 lived and farmed in Buffalo, Marquette County. Enumerated next to them that year was Daniel & Ann Muir, the parents of the famed Scottish-American naturalist and conservationist John Muir (1838-1914).[Cen 1860] John Muir's Fountain Lake Farm is about three miles due west of Buffalo.

The Cottrells moved to Iowa around 1864 (between the births of Annie and William).[Cen 1870] Albert was reported to have been born in Iowa City, Wright County, Iowa. By 1865 they moved 250 miles north to Danville Township, Blue Earth County, Minnesota. March 2020Enumerated near the Cottrells were the William & Phebe Preston family and the Wilbert & Lauren Preston family, possibly Sally's kin.[Cen 1865]

They continued northwest about 45 miles to Riverdale Township, Watonwan County, Minnesota, by 1870.[Cen 1870] Riverdale Township is about 35 miles southwest of Kasota Township, where Sylvanus was noted in 1857.

By 1875, the family again moved about 30 miles back east to Mankato, Blue Earth County, Minnesota[Cen 1875]; and then another 160 miles northwest to Ortonville, Big Stone County, Minnesota, near the South Dakota state line, by 1880.[Cen 1880]

Sylvanus Cottrell likely died between 1880 and 1890, probably in Blue Earth County. He would have been in his 50s.

After Sylvanus' death, Sally reportedly remarried Sherman W. Bronson on March 8, 1891, in Mankato, Blue Earth County. He reportedly died 16 years later on January 31, 1908, in Dayton, Montgomery County, Ohio. He was about 68 years old.

Sarah Jane (Preston) Cottrell reportedly died on April 6, 1922, in Brainerd, Crow Wing County, Minnesota. She was about 86 years old.

Benjamin W. COTTRELL (~1832->1865)

135. April 2020Benjamin W. Cottrell was born about 1832 in Pennsylvania. He married Ellen L. around 1851 and had at least three children:

1351. Warren Cottrell (1851-1852) --  --
1352. Nora Cottrell (1854-1855) --  --
1353. Janett Cottrell (1856-1857) --  --

The Cottrell started in Waterford Township, Erie County, Pennsylvania, where his parents had settled by 1830.

Benjamin's parents deeded property in Amity Township to him on April 11, 1862, and on the same day deeded land to Samuel Estes. Estes later deeded land in Amity Township back to Benjamin on December 13, 1865, and he in turn deeded it to his brother Nathaniel on the same day.[Deed Index] (Estes' son Elijah went on to marry Benjamin's niece, Ellen Elizabeth Burt in 1876 and they lived not far from Benjamin's sister Cynthia in Waterford Township.)

Benjamin deeded land in Le Boeuf Township, Erie County, to Levi B. Waldren on March 10, 1888.[Deed Index]

April 2020No further records about Benjamin nor any of his children have been found.

Merrill L. COTTRELLΔ (~1835-1921)

136. Merrill L. CottrellΔ was born in in Erie County, Pennsylvania, likely in Fairview Township, reportedly on January 1, 1836. He married Fanny M. Brooks, reportedly on January 6, 1856, in Pennsylvania. They had as many as nine children:

1361. Henry H. Cottrell 14 Apr 1857 2 Jun 1881 (24)
1362. Charles L. Cottrell 14 Nov 1859 31 May 1911 (51)

Le Sueur County,
Minnesota Territory, 1857

Township 110 Range 26:[Cen 1857A]
M. Cotrell, age 27, Pennsylvania
M. J. Cotrell, age 21, Ohio (Fanny's approximate age but incorrect birth state)
Ch[arles] Cotrell, age 8 months, Minnesota
Sylvanus Cotrell, age 25, Pennsylvania (Merrill's elder brother despite the age)

Township 111 Range 2[3][Cen 1857B]:
[V] Cotrell, age 27, Pennsylvania
M. [A]. Cotrell, age 30, New York (Fanny's birth state but incorrect age)
Rosetta Cotrell, age 1, Wisconsin (Rosetta was his niece, brother Sylvanus' first child)

Son Henry was born in the Minnesota Territory and soon after the family was enumerated twice in Le Sueur County: once in Township 110 North, Range 26 West (Kasota Township) and again in Township 111 North, Range 23 West (Montgomery Township). The first appears to record Henry as "Charles," and includes Merrill's eldest brother Sylvanus; the second includes Sylvanus' daughter Rosetta.[Cen 1857A/B]

The family later moved 300 miles back east to Waupun Village, Fond du Lac County, Wisconsin, by 1858, where the rest of the children were likely born, except for Louisa, who was born in Ohio.[Cen 1860, 1870] Fanny's parents and siblings lived nearby in Waupun Village.[Cen 1860, 1870]

Around 1878 the Cottrells moved 360 miles back west to Redwood Falls, Redwood County, Minnesota. There Merrill worked as a stone mason, son Henry as a blacksmith, and Charles as a laborer.[Cen 1880, Obit 1921]

Two children, Edward and Nancy, reportedly died in April 1879 at the ages of 9 and 6, allegedly in Toledo, Lucas County, Ohio.

Fanny M. (Brooks) Cottrell reportedly died of diphtheria on June 2, 1881, while in Toledo, Lucas County, Ohio. She was 43 years old.

After Fanny's death, Merrill was enumerated back in Wisconsin in Horicon, Dodge County, about 20 miles south of Waupun. His household comprised one male and three females[Cen 1885]--three of his sons had passed, Charles and Adelia may have already wed, and therefore the three daughters accounted for were likely Mary, Louisa, and Ella May.

Thereafter Merrill moved around Minnesota. He moved to Osceola, Renville County, Minnesota, in 1895, where he was enumerated with the Henry & Frank Henrickson brothers and the John & Mary Larson family, all immigrants from Sweden.[Cen 1895] He has yet to be located in the 1900 census, but in 1905 Merrill moved to Brook Park Township, Pine County, where he farmed. The state census noted that he had been a resident of the state for 49 years and a resident of Brook Park for two months.[Cen 1905] In 1910 he was enumerated in Pokegama Township, just south of Brook Park Township, where he rented a home.[Cen 1910]

Merrill moved in with his daughter Adelia (Cottrell) Johnson and her family in Tower City, Barnes County, North Dakota, around 1916.[Obit 1921] In 1920 he was enumerated with his grandson Walter Johnson and his family in Koldok, Barnes County, just 3 miles west of Tower City. Daughter, Adelia and her family lived next-door.[Cen 1920]

Merrill L. Cottrell died on August 3, 1921, in Riverside Hospital, in Valley City, Barnes County. He was 85 years old.

The Daily Times-Record, Valley City, North Dakota, August 11, 1921[Obit 1921]

Cynthia (COTTRELL) BROWN (~1837-1920)

137.Cynthia Cottrell was born in Pennsylvania in April 1837[Cen 1900], but some accounts report she was born on April 4, 1835. She married Evlin "Doc" Brown, reportedly on April 14, 1854, and had nine children, all of whom outlived her:[Cen 1900]

1371. Harriett Brown 29 Aug 1856 24 Mar 1941 (84)
1372. Julia Ann Brown 5 May 1859 26 Sep 1932 (73)
1373. Merinda Brown 13 Feb 1861 23 Sep 1938 (77)
1374. Daniel J. Brown 13 Feb 1863 15 Nov 1922  (59)
1375. Rosetta Brown 13 Feb 1865 23 Nov 1935 (70)
1376. John Brown 2 Aug 1867 20 Feb 1932 (64)

1378. Emaretta Brown 5 Jul 1871 21 Feb 1951 (79)
1379. Elizabeth Brown 5 Apr 1873 18 Apr 1948 (75)

The Brown family was established in Waterford Township, Erie County, Pennsylvania by 1860. In 1860, Evlin had yet to buy land and worked as a laborer[Cen 1860], but by 1870 had purchased land worth $2,600.[Cen 1870] Cynthia's brother Henry Cottrell lived with them in 1880, and the family was enumerated nine households after her niece Ellen (Burt) Estes and her family.[Cen 1880]

The Browns continued to farm in Waterford Township in 1900 but on a rented farm.[Cen 1900]

By 1910, the Browns lived with son Daniel on Wattsburg Road in Waterford Township.[Cen 1910] Wattsburg Road likely refers to the Wattsburg-Waterford Road that runs east from Waterford to Wattsburg. The family was also enumerated following households on Union Road, which runs south west from Wattsburg-Waterford Road, just outside of Waterford town. Also living with the Browns was Cynthia's nephews Roy and Bennie Cottrell. Roy, age 18, worked as a farm laborer and Bennie, age 10, attended school.[Cen 1910]

Evlin "Doc" Brown reportedly died on June 20, 1913 and was buried in Waterford Cemetery.[Grave] He was about 81 years old.

After Evlin's death, Cynthia continued to live with her son Daniel on Wattsburg Road, as did nephew Roy Cottrell, and son George also moved in by 1920.[Cen 1920]

Cynthia (Cottrell) Brown died seven years after Evlin, reportedly on July 20, 1920, and was buried with him in Waterford Cemetery.[Grave] She was either 83 or 85 years old.

Estes later deeded land in Amity Township back to Benjamin on December 13, 1865, and he in turn deeded it to Ichabod on the same day. Likewise, Ichabod deeded the property to nephew Daniel J. Brown on the same day.[Deed Index]

Civil War

Ichabod served in the U.S. Navy during the Civil War from September 1, 1864, to June 15, 1864. He held the rank of Landsman (the lowest, entry-level rank) and served aboard the U.S.S. Moose.[Grave] The U.S.S. Moose was a steamer, laid down in 1863, that the Union Navy assigned to the Mississippi Squadron as a gunboat to patrol Confederate waterways. The Moose patrolled the Tennessee River and Cumberland River from April 1864 through April 1865. After the Confederate surrender in April 1865, the U.S.S. Moose steamed to Jefferson Barracks, near St. Louis, Missouri, and was discharged, decommissioned, and ultimately sold at public auction.

The Cottrells moved south to Oil Creek Township, Crawford County, by 1880, where Mary's 63-year-old mother, Lucy Moore, lived with the family.[Cen 1880]

Mary (Moore) Cottrell died on February 3, 1899, at the age of 50. She was buried at Oak Hill Cemetery, Bradford, McKean County, Pennsylvania.[Grave]

Ichabod likely remarried after Mary's death, as indicated by the 1910 census, but details are not yet known. By 1910, Ichabod moved to Glade Township, Warren County, Pennsylvania, where he, his daughter Jennie (Cottrell) Mohr, and three of her children lived on Locust Street out the outskirts of the eastern half of Warren town.[Cen 1910]

Nathaniel Ichabod Cottrell (Jr.) died on October 11, 1911, and was buried in Waterford Cemetery. His headstone reads "Ichabode Cottrell, U.S. Navy."[Grave] He was about 70 years old.
