Pozzi Family History, Part X

May 2016
Contents

May 2016We descend from three branches of the sizeable Pozzi family of Giumaglio and Coglio so these pages are divided into those three branches (Parts A, B, and C) and a top-level view of each of the other branches (Part X):

Italian and Latin Names
Parish records, from which most of this information comes, is primarily written in Latin, while civil records are primarily written in Italian. Names that have only been observed in Latin but have either been converted to Italian or left in Latin are rendered in italics.

Giacomo POZZI (~1617-1685)

June 2015W. Giacomo Pozzi, one of at least three of the same name during the same time period, is not suspected to be of any immediate relationship to our two known Pozzi lines, but is addressed here as part of a closer to look to find connections. As with the others, he was like born in Giumaglio, Ticino canton, Switzerland. He had as many as four children:

W1. Giovanni Pozzi (1646) (5 Nov 1695) (50)
W2. Giovanni Giacomo Pozzi, Doctor (1647) 22 Jan 1680 (32)
W3. Catterina Pozzi (1651) 23 Oct 1686 (35)
W4. Maria Margherita Pozzi --  (> 1674) --

In an effort sort the children of the three Giacomo Pozzis, this focuses on the family of Giacomo's son, Doctor Giovanni Giacomo Pozzi. Four baptism records identify the doctor's siblings:

In the first the doctor is named as godfather to Marta Catterina Cerini and identified as the son of Giacomo along with his sister Catterina, the godmother, who was "daughter of aforesaid Giacomo Pozzi."[Bap 1671] The two are similarly appointed as godparents to Angelo Maria Lesina.[Bap 1672A] In a third record, the doctor and his sister Maria are named as godparents to Innocenzo Mariano Gaspari and identified as "both children of Giacomo Pozzi."[Bap 1672B] Maria is assumed to refer to Maria Margherita. As for Giovanni, he and sister Catterina, "children of Giacomo Pozzi," are named as godparents to Maria Margherita Bonetti.[Bap 1678]

Through 1682, none of the references to father Giacomo identify him as deceased. He is first identified as deceased in the death record of daughter Catterina in late 1686.[Dth 1686] The most likely candidate who died between 1682 and 1686 is the Giacomo Pozzi who died on January 15, 1685, at his home in Giumaglio. He was reportedly 67 years old and was buried the following day in the cemetery of the Church of Santa Maria Assunta.[Dth 1685]

Don Giovanni Giacomo POZZI (~1627-1694)

July 2015X. Don Giovanni Giacomo Pozzi, the town notary, was one of four men of the same name during the same time period, two of whom were "dons" and one a vicar. He is not suspected to be of any immediate relationship to our two known Pozzi lines, but is addressed here as part of a closer to look to find connections. As with the others, he was like born in Giumaglio, Ticino canton, Switzerland. He married Giacomina Perinoni of Someo and at least one daughter and a foster daughter. By association, Giacomo may also have had as many as four sons:

(X1.) Giovanni Pietro Pozzi (1654) 23 Mar 1710 (55)
(X2.) Francesco Pozzi (1661) 8 May 1708 (47)
(X3.) Silvestro Pozzi --  (> 1677) --
(X4.) Agostino Pozzi (1664-1665) (> 1698) (> 33)

X5. Maria Maddalena Pozzi (< 1670) (> 1686) --
X6. Cecilia (Pozzi) (foster) (1674-1675) 24 Aug 1677 (2)
Pozzi-Parinoni
Dr. Giovanni Giacomo Pozzi also married into the Parinoni family of Someo by 1670. His wife Maria Parinoni was 20 years or more younger than Giacomina. Any relationship between the two is unknown.

July 2015Two Don Pozzis of the same name were contemporaries. The notary was the elder and the younger was the town doctor. While numerous records, notably baptisms, reference the notary, only three explicitly identify his children as the children of the notary. The first was Maria Maddelena who was identified twice as the notary's daughter: first when confirmed in the church in 1677[Con 1677] and again when named as godmother to Silvestro Pozzi, possibly her nephew and the notary's grandson.[Bap 1686] The other was was Cecilia who died at the age of 2. She was identified as "educated" (educata/raised by) the notary.[Dth 1677]

Pozzi Connections
July 2015Don Giovanni Giacomo Pozzi may have been a first cousin to our Giovanni Pozzi1 as suggested by the marriage of his likely son Francesco to Giovanni's daughter Lucrezia, at which time Francesco and Lucrezia were identifed as second cousins.

June 2015During the last week of May 1677, Giovanni Ambrogio Torriano, Bishop of Como, held mass confirmation ceremonies for parishes in the valley at Maggia, 4 kilometers downriver, and Someo, 2 kilometers upriver. Four Pozzi males were confirmed at the Church of San Maurizio in Maggia on May 22: Giovanni Pietro, Francesco, Silvestro, and Agostino.[Con 1677A] Two Pozzi females were also confirmed the following week at the Church of Santi Placido ed Eustachio in Someo on May 31: Catterina Righetti, wife of Giovanni Pietro Pozzi, and Maria Maddalena Pozzi, who was identified as the notary's daughter.[Con 1677B] These six formed a cluster within the records suggesting a closeness in relationship. Furthermore, these six Pozzis were sponsored by the aristocracy of the valley at the confirmations, indicative of the notary's station. In the above order, the godparents were assigned as follows: Don Antonio Laloli of Gordevio; The Most Illustrious and Dom. Giovanni Francesco Abegg of Sciutto, Commissary of Valle Maggia and Val Lavizzara; Dom. Martino Bassi of Cerentino; Pietro Borlini of Maggia; Donna Constanza (Garoni) Franzoni; and Margherita Parinoni of Someo.[Con 1677A-B] From these, Giovanni Pietro, Francesco, Silvestro, and Agostino are suspected to be sons or otherwise closely related to the notary.

Giacomina (Perinoni) Pozzi died on December 25, 1680, at the family home in Giumaglio following an illness of at least five days. She was in her 50s and was buried in the cemetery of the Church of Santa Maria Assunta.[Dth 1680]

The first parish census of Giumaglio in 1692 suggests further relationships. Although not identified as the notary, Giovanni Giacomo Pozzi, age 64, was enumerated with his son Giovanni Pietro, age 37, his wife and four children, and with son Agostino, age 27.[Cen 1692]

Immediate following the Giacomo's household (page 15A) in the census were seven others: Francesco Pozzi, age 29, and wife Lucrezia Pozzi (15B); Giovanni Pozzi, age 75, son Giovanni Giacomo Pozzi, and his wife Maria Bassi (15C); Giovanni Antonio Pozzi, age 24, and wife Margherita Delnotaro (15D); brothers Angelo and Tonini Pozzi, ages 21 and 14, sons of another Giovanni Antonio (16A); Alessio Pozzi, age 30, and wife Maria Cerini (16B); Giovanni Giacomo Pozzi, age 67 or 61, son Zane, age 32, and his wife Giovanna Cerini (16C); and Maria (Parinoni) Pozzi, age 42, widow of the late Dr. Giovanni Giacomo Pozzi (17A).[Cen 1692]

Don Giovanni Giacomo Pozzi, Notary of Giumaglio, died at the age of "67 years or about" on August 26, 1694, at his home in Giumaglio. He was buried in the cemetery of the Church of Santa Maria Assunta.[Dth 1694]

Following Giacomo's death, his sons Giovanni Pietro and Agostino carried on in 1698. Their household (11C) was similarly followed by six of the seven enumerated in 1692: Francesco Pozzi, age 36, and wife Lucrezia Pozzi (11D); Giovanni Giacomo Pozzi, and his wife Maria Bassi (11E); Maria (Parinoni) Pozzi, age 50, widow of the late Dr. Giovanni Giacomo Pozzi (12A); Giovanna (Cerini) Pozzi, widow of Zane Pozzi, age 36 (12B); and brothers Angelo and Tonini Pozzi, ages 26 and 20 (12C). A one change since 1692 was that Alessio Pozzi, age 36, and wife Maria Cerini were recorded on page 8A.[Cen 1698]

It is unclear who succeeded Don Giovanni Giacomo Pozzi as notary of Giumaglio in 1694. The next known notary was Don Giovanni Giumini, who was first identified as the notary in 1722 when at the age of 20.

Giovanni Giacomo POZZI (~1624-<1694)

July 2015Y. Giovanni Giacomo Pozzi was one of four men of the same name during the same time period, two of whom were "dons" and one a vicar. He was about three years older than the town notaio and about 22 years older than the town doctor. He is not suspected to be of any immediate relationship to our two known Pozzi lines, but is addressed here as part of a closer to look to find connections. As with the others, he was like born in Giumaglio, Ticino canton, Switzerland. Giovanni Giacomo Pozzi had at least two or three children:

Y1. Giovanni "Zane" Pozzi (1659-1660) 12 Jul 1694 (35)
(Y2.) Giacomina Rosa Pozzi (1669-1670) (> 1703) (> 33)
(YX.) Giovanna Maria Pozzi --  (> 1690) --

Giacomo is chiefly known from the first parish census of 1692 when he was named as the head of household with his son Zane, age 32, his son's wife Giovanna Cerini, and their three daughters. This household was the last of 11 Pozzi households counted that year and followed a grouping of seven other Pozzi households begun with that of Don Giovanni Giacomo Pozzi, the town notary.[Cen 1692]

Daughter Giacomina Rosa was identified as a daughter of "the late Giovanni Giacomo Pozzi" (but which one?) in 1698 when she enumerated as a servant to the widow Maria (Parinoni) Pozzi.[Cen 1698] Later she lived with apparent brother Zane and his family.[Cen 1702] Zane also had a daughter named Giacomina Rosa, presumably named after her. Come 1703, Giacomina Rosa was recorded as a sevant to the family of Giovanni Pozzi and Giovanna Mazzini.[Cen 1703]

Giovanni Giacomo Pozzi died sometime between 1692 and 1694, prior to the death of son Zane on July 12, 1694.[Dth 1694] He was likely in his late 60s.

After Giacomo's and son Zane's deaths, Zane's widow Giovanna carried on with their three daughters and her sister Catterina Cerini.[Cen 1698]

Don Giovanni POZZI (1618-1696)

February 2016Z. Don Giovanni Pozzi, notaio and chancellor of the neighboring village of Coglio, was recorded as being from both Giumaglio and Coglio. No other early Pozzi were found so it appears that he and his family moved across the Riale de Giumaglio that separates the two towns to become the notary by 1686. Giovanni married Apollonia Pozzi of Giumaglio in April 1686 in either Giumaglio or Coglio. She may have been the widow of Giovanni Battista Delnotaro of Coglio. Giovanni and Apollonia had at least two children who survived to adulthood:

Z1. Giovanni Francesco Pozzi (I) 12 Aug 1688 (1747) (58)
Z2. Maria Maddalena Pozzi 6 May 1693 (2 Feb 1754) (60)

Giovanni and Appolonia chose the following godparents for their children:

Don Pozzi was first recorded as notary in 1688 when he was named as godfathr to Giovanni Pietro Alonzo Parinoni of Someo.[Bap 1688A] He was posthumously referred to as Chancellor of Coglio.

Don Giovanni Pozzi reportedly died in 1696. He was about 78 years old.
