Contents

May 2016We descend from three branches of the sizeable Pozzi family of Giumaglio and Coglio so these pages are divided into those three branches (Parts A, B, and C) and a top-level view of each of the other branches (Part X):

Italian and Latin Names
Parish records, from which most of this information comes, is primarily written in Latin, while civil records are primarily written in Italian. Names that have only been observed in Latin but have either been converted to Italian or left in Latin are rendered in italics.

Giacomo Tomaso POZZI (1680-1730)

April 2016X13. Giacomo Tomaso Pozzi was born on December 18, 1680, in Giumaglio, Ticino canton, Switzerland, and baptized on the 21st. His godparents were named as Father Pietro Giacomo Pozzi, Vicar of Giumaglio, and Maria Maddalena Pozzi.[Bap 1680] Giacomo Tomaso married Maria Gasparini on March 2, 1701, in Giumaglio, and had six children, including a pair of twins; however, all died young. Three months after Maria's death, he remarried to Maria Lafranchi of the neighboring village of Coglio on June 28, 1717. They had four children, however, nothing more was recorded after their baptisms suggesting they also may have died young. All together, Giacomo Tomaso fathered ten children:

Giacomo Tomaso rose to some standing in the community, as evident by his being named as godfather to 23 children and as witness to 15 marriages in the parishes of Giumaglio and Coglio between 1693 and 1729.

Giacomo Tomaso and Maria wed on March 2, 1701, at the Church of Santa Maria Assunta in Giumaglio. Before their marriage they obtained dispensation for the impediments of the third degree of consanguinity (i.e., second cousins) in one line and the fourth degree (i.e., third cousins) in another, however, the exact connections of their relationships is not known. Recorded witnesses were Daniele Gaspari and Pietro Cristoforo Pedrotti.[Mar 1701]

By 1709, Giacomo Tomaso took over the family household, which comprised his wife and first son, his widowed mother, two younger brothers, and a 24-year-old Giovanna Pozzi, who was enumerated as a servant.[Cen 1709]

Maria (Gasparini) Pozzi died on March 19, 1717, at the family home in Giumaglio. She was buried the following day in the cemetery of the Church of Santa Maria Assunta. Maria was recorded to be "about 29 years" old[Dth 1711] but was actually 36. She and Giacomo Tomaso had been married 16 years.

Three months after Maria's death, Giacomo Tomaso remarried to Maria Lafranchi on June 28, 1717, at the Church of Santa Maria Assunta in Giumaglio. Their ceremony was conducted by Giacomo Tomaso's younger brother, Father Giovanni Battista Pozzi. Before their marriage they also obtained dispensation for the impediments of the third degree of consanguinity (i.e., second cousins) in one line and the fourth degree (i.e., third cousins) of consanguinity and affinity (i.e., related by marriage rather than by blood). The exact connections of their relationships are not known, but the affinity suggests that his two brides were also related somehow. Recorded witnesses were Giovanni Pietro Sartori2 and Guglielmo Stolfi.[Mar 1701]

Three months after their wedding, Giacomo Tomaso's two surviving children from his first marriage died five days apart on October 15 and 20. Both were buried in the cemetery of the Church of Santa Maria Assunta.[Dth 1717A/B]

Giacomo Tomaso and his wives chose the following godparents for their children:

  1. Giacomo Felice: no baptism record found in Giumaglio;
  2. Giovanni: Giacomo Pietro Giornica and Domenica Pedrotti, Maria's niece[Bap 1709];
  3. Giovanna (elder): Don Giovanni Francesco Pozzi of Coglio and his sister Mrs. Maria Maddalena Pozzi[Bap 1710];
  4. Domenica: Pietro Gasparini, Maria's elder brother, and Mrs. Domenica (Tomasini) Pozzi, wife of Don Pozzi, above[Bap 1711A];
  5. Giovanni Battista: Giovanni Pozzi and Giacomina Pozzi[Bap 1711B], likely the wife of Maria's brother Pietro Gasparini;
  6. Giovanna (younger): Antonio Caneverini of Coglio and Giacomina Cerini[Bap 1715];
  7. Pietro Cristo: Giacomo Pietro Righetti of Someo and Giovanna Maria Gasparini[Bap 1720];
  8. Catterina: Baldassare Amanzio Pozzi (husband of Giovanna Maria Gasparini, above) and Mrs. Domenica (Tomasini) Pozzi of Coglio, as above[Bap 1723];
  9. Giovanna (youngest): Don Giovanni Francesco Pozzi of Coglio and Giacoma Pozzi[Bap 1726]; and
  10. Angelo Giacomo: Giacomo Filippo Pozzi and Maria Lafranchi.[Bap 1729]

Giacomo Tomaso Pozzi died on February 20, 1731, at the age of 50. He was buried in the cemetery of the Church of Santa Maria Assunta.[Dth 1731]
