GUERRA Family History, Part I

April 2019
Italian and Latin Names
Parish records, from which most of this information comes, is primarily written in Latin, while civil records are primarily written in Italian. Names that have only been observed in Latin but have either been converted to Italian or left in Latin are rendered in italics.

The Guerra family of Someo apparently takes its name from "war," which suggests that the progenitor was a soldier.

Giovanni GUERRA1 (<1664-<1717)

1.November 2018Giovanni Guerra1 was born sometime before 1664 and died between 1712 and 1717. He is only known through records of as many as eight likely children:

(11.) Antonio Guerra (1666) 4 Sep 1741 (75)
12. Giacoma Guerra (1677-1678) 10 Jan 1743 (65)
13. Maria Margherita Guerra (1684-1685) 10 Jun 1743 (58)
14. Giovanni Antonio Guerra (1690) 11 Dec 1752 (62)
15. Domenica Guerra2 (1691) 22 Nov 1724 (33)
16. Giuseppe Guerra (1699) (3 Jan 1772) (72)
17. Giovanni Guerra (Jr.) (1702) 27 Dec 1752 (50)
18. Giovanna Maria Guerra (< 1708) (> 1730) (> 22)

Giovanni Guerra died after 1712, when Antonio and Domenica both married, and before the marriage of Giuseppe in 1719. Surviving death records begin in 1717 and do not show his death afterward, so he likely died before 1717.

Antonio GUERRA (~1666-1741)

11. April 2019Antonio Guerra was born sometime about 1666, probably in Someo, Ticino canton, Switzerland. Given his age difference from that of his apparent siblings, he has not been confirmed as the son of the same Giovanni Guerra. Antonio married twice to Maria Giovannini, daughter of the late Pietro, and Margherita Filipponi, daughter Giovanni Giacomo. Antonio and Margherita had at least three daughters after 1723 when surviving baptism records began:

111. Maria Elena Guerra 15 Jul 1723 --  --
121. Maria Maddalena Guerra 23 Apr 1726 19 Jul 1745 (19)
131. Maria Margherita Guerra 15 May 1732 15 Sep 1745 (9)

Antonio and Maria Giovannini wed on March 12, 1700, in Someo. Witness to their union were Giovanni Pietro Caporgno and Giovanni Pietro Lanotti.[Mar 1700]

Maria (Giovannini) Guerra likely died before 1712, but death records are not available before 1717.

Antonio remarried to Margherita Filipponi on February 8, 1712, in Someo, along with four other couples, including Antonio's likely younger sister, Domenica Guerra2. Witnesses to their marriage were Antonio Muscio and Giovanni Battista Coppi.[Mar 1712] April 2019Antonio was about 24 years older than Margherita--he about 46 years old and she about 22.

Antonio Guerra died at his home in Someo on September 4, 1741, and was buried the following day in the cemetery of Someo. He was "about 75 years" old.[Dth 1741A] Nine-year-old daughter Maria Margherita died 11 days later on September 15 and was buried that evening.[Dth 1741B]

Margherita (Filipponi) Guerra died a year later at her home in Someo on January 9, 1743, and was buried the following day. She was reported to be "about 52 years" old.[Dth 1743]

Daughter Maddalena died on July 19, 1745, at the home of Giovanni Guerra, son of the late Giovanni Giacomo (relationship unknown), and was buried the following day. She was recorded to be "about 18 years" old but was 19.
