Family Histories:

Lafranchi Family History, Part C-II

July 2016
A fire destroyed most Coglio parish records on January 24, 1745. Father Giovanni Battista Pozzi selectively reconstructed the baptism and marriage records in that year from other records and the testimony of parishioners. As such the majority of the information about Coglio before 1745 is from that reconstruction, except for a few records from the neighboring parish of Giumaglio. Death records are not available for Coglio until 1888 so deaths throughout are estimated.
Italian and Latin Names
Parish records, from which most of this information comes, is primarily written in Latin, while civil records are primarily written in Italian. Names that have only been observed in Latin but have either been converted to Italian or left in Latin are rendered in italics.

Giovanni Antonio LAFRANCHI (III)3 (1704->1739)

C11.February 2016 Giovanni Antonio Lafranchi (III)3 may be the father of Maria Perpetua Lafranchi4. According to her marriage records and the baptism records of her children, she had one brother, Giovanni Antonio Lafranchi (IV). Based on those, her father was likely the one born and baptized on December 20, 1704, in Coglio, Ticino, Switzerland. His godparents were named as Giacomo Tomaso Pozzi, his maternal uncle, and Mrs. Maria Catterina Caneverini.[Bap 1704]

Antonio married Giovanna Maria Pozzi4 on March 20, 1729, in Coglio. They had four sons per reconstructed baptism records, but Maria Perpetua4 was not recorded among them:

C111. Giovanni Antonio Maria Lafranchi (IV) 10 Dec 1731 (1770) (38)
(C112.) Maria Perpetua Lafranchi4 (1731-1732) 13 Jan 1782 (50)
C113. Giuseppe Maria Lafranchi (I)Δ 25 Sep 1733 (1794-1803) (60s)
C114. Pietro Antonio Maria LafranchiΔ 23 Aug 1734 --  --
C115. Stefano Maria Lafranchi 1 Oct 1739 --  --

Giovanni Antonio and Giovanna chose the following godparents for their children:

  1. Giovanni Antonio (IV): Don Giovanni Francesco Pozzi and Mrs. Maria (Gasparini) Pozzi, the wife of Giovanni Antonio's maternal uncle and godfather, Giacomo Tomaso Pozzi[Bap 1731];
  2. Maria Perpetua: no baptism records found in Coglio;
  3. Giuseppe: Giovanni Battista Lafranchi and Mrs. Maria Elena (Pozzi) Lesina, Giovanna's sister[Bap 1733];
  4. Pietro Antonio: Giovanni Caneverini and Mrs. Maria Guglielmetti[Bap 1734]; and
  5. Stefano: Giovanni Giacomo Caneverini and Mrs. Maria Catterina Pozzi, wife of Don Rodolfo Pozzi.[Bap 1739]

February 2016Giovanni Antonio Lafranchi (III) died sometime before daughter Maria's marriage in 1754.[Mar 1754]
